What is Happening??

Worship Leader

We would like to welcome Barbara Crowder as our Worship Leader for the month of March.

Welcome

We would like to welcome Rebecca Ravenshaw to Mountain View this morning.

Rebecca Ravenshaw, Soprano, holds a Bachelor of Music degree in voice from Stetson University, Florida, and a Master of Arts in opera performance from California State University, Los Angeles.  Further operatic training was obtained at the American Institute of Musical Studies, Graz, Austria.

She has performed leading operatic roles throughout the western U.S. including Tosca, Carmen, Nedda, Rosina, Fiordiligi, and Woglinde in Richard Wagner’s epic cycle, Der Ring des Nibelungen with the Arizona Opera.  Ms. Ravenshaw has appeared as a guest soloist with the Utah, Sacramento and Santa Fe symphonies.  She has been a vocalist at patriotic and military ceremonies across the country including a memorial W.A.S.P. event in Los Angeles, 2008, and also a Veterans Day celebration at the Los Angeles-VA Hospital.  In December 2009, she was the soloist at the D-Day Memorial for WWII veteran fighter pilot, Bill Overstreet, as he received the Legion of Honor Metal from the French Ambassador.  The soprano will be a guest patriotic soloist for the Red, white and Blue Tribute to our Veterans and their Families benefiting the Children’s Miracle Network, March 13, 2010, at the Tilley Center, Liberty University, Lynchburg, VA.

We need YOU Sunday Night!

We have about 50 youth, children and leaders who will be at church at 5:00pm expecting dinner and no one has signed up to cook for them!  They’ll be so sad…and hungry!  Could you please help out?  The “Dinner Sign-Up” has undergone an extreme makeover..please check it out in the Narthex and get some menu ideas.  We’ve even priced several kid-friendly items at Sam’s for you!  Please let Barbara Crowder or Beth Speake know if you can prepare dinner for Sunday, March 7.  Thank you for your help!!!

Messengers Choir

Auditions for the spring play, Camp Wallaballa, will take place on Sunday, March 7, at 6:30pm.  Children and teens of all ages are encouraged to audition.  If you have any questions, please call Ava Marie Vance 239-6068 or e-mail her avaluvtosing@gmail.com.

UMYF

The youth will be sending care packages to our college students.  They are asking for donations of shoeboxes from the congregation to be brought no later than March 14.  If your child is a college student, please send their address to Beth Speake bspeake@verizon.net.

PEAKS Fundraiser

The PEAKS Fundraiser will be March 7 and 14.  It’s so easy to support the program!  We’ll be selling homemade bread in the Narthex for $5 a loaf!  The money raised will go toward a new curriculum for the fall called Buzz! and for any supplies we may need for crafts and mission projects.  Thanks for helping out!

Girl Scout Cookies

It has been approved to sell Girl Scout Cookies on Sunday, March 14, in the Narthex after church to send to the military.  Please give the names and addresses of military people to Ellen Bohn (385-0007) or e-mail her at

ebbohn@verizon.net.

NEEDED:  PR PERSON

Have you noticed??  Our church is growing and things are happening!  We want everyone to know what we are doing here at Mountain View but most of us don't know how to do it.  Please prayerfully consider your gifts and talents and listen to be led to this new and exciting PR team position at Mountain View.  We need a "go to" person to take our event information and get it where it can be seen by the public in as many formats as possible - preferably the free ones!  Believe it or not, not everyone gets Ron's e-mails!  If you are interested or have any questions regarding this opportunity to help Mountain View grow, please contact Mike Waldmann 525-4920 or e-mail him at sosausa@endhunger.com.

Food Lion Community Rewards Program

We have just 28 more links to reach our goal of 100!  If you haven’t linked your Food Lion MVP Card, stop in the Narthex and we can do it for you.  Thanks to everyone for participating.  Ask your family, friends, and neighbors too.  If you have any questions, contact Jean Cornelius (525-7721) jscornelius@verizon.net.  We’re almost there!

Lenten Worship Services

There will be Community Lenten Worship Services held at Bethany UMC, located behind Virginia Memorial Park on Rt. 221 through March 31.  There will be a luncheon following the service with a suggested donation of $5.00 to be donated to Bedford Christian Ministries.  This week, March 10, Father Chris Heying and St. Stephen’s Episcopal Church will be bringing the message and preparing the luncheon.

Lenten Worship

Our next Lenten Worship Service will be held on Wednesday, March 10, at 7:00pm.  Todd Brown will be our guest speaker.   Before the service, everyone will meet in the Fellowship Hall for a Soup and Sandwich Supper at 6:00pm.  Please bring your own sandwich; the soup, drinks and dessert will be furnished.  Everyone is asked to make a donation of $3.00 per person with no family paying over $10.00 to cover the cost of the soup.

SOSA Lenten Devotionals

Many Christian churches will share in the Holy Sacrament of the Eucharist today.  We are guests at the table of Jesus.  This day, may we remember the 49 million Americans who will not be sitting at a table with food in front of them to eat.  May we open our hearts and open our tables to receive others as if Jesus is….a guest at our table.  For each guest at your table, each person that God has placed in your life for you to love, set aside 2 cents.  At the Society of St. Andrew, that 2 cents translates into a serving of food that will be used to feed God’s hungry children.  Please pick up your Society of St. Andrew Lenten Devotional and Coin Bank at the Welcome Desk in the Gathering Room.

District Lay Speaking Ministries Classes

Many laity think that Lay Speaking Ministries is only “speaking”.  It is so much more.  Come and learn how you can be partners in ministry with our clergy.  The next scheduled training event is March 26-27 at Main Street UMC in Bedford.  They will be conducting both “Basic” classes and a “Teaching the Bible” class for the advanced class.  If you have any questions or would like to register for either class, please contact Joyce Duncan at mduncan@jetbroadband.com or call 525-7380.

Easter Egg Celebration

March 21  5-7pm

Hey kids!  Christ arose on Easter morn and we can celebrate our new birth in him by coming to our celebration!  We’ll have games, crafts, and more, and of course, our Easter Egg Hunt!  So bring your baskets!

Dinner starts us off at 5:00pm.

Maundy Thursday Service

In place of our regular Wednesday night Ascent Worship Service, on Thursday, April 1, Mountain View will present our Maundy Thursday Service.  The evening will begin with a Covered Dish Dinner at 6:00pm in the Fellowship Hall.  Everyone is asked to bring a main dish and a side or dessert.  At 7:00pm, the presentation “As I Have Loved You” will take place.  Holy Communion will be served.  Invite your friends and neighbors to come be a part of this most moving presentation.

Godsightings

Enjoy this week’s Godsighting!  Remember, all you have to do is look.

This week was the writing SOL in 8th grade.  I thought I was prepared to take the test until I read the prompt "If you could choose one person to come speak to your class, who would it be and why?”  I panicked.  I stopped and thought about the teacher's suggestion to use a fictional character.  Finally, God gave me the idea to take that fictional character, make him an inventor and create three inventions to discuss in my paper.  Very soon, I was into writing my paper and created a story I was proud of.

If you would like to offer a sighting for next week, please e-mail

Godsightings@mountainviewumc.org or simply submit the note below in the offering plate.  For more Godsightings, visit our website www.Mountainviewumc.org and click on the “Godsightings” button.
